Day 1
Children's Diary:Today I had 2 Fridays. I left Melbourne on Friday morning flew on Qantas for 14 hours and arrived in Los Angeles on Friday morning. There were games to play and movies to watch, I fell asleep at the last hour of the flight. They gave us funny masks to wear on the plane to help us sleep. We got meals but I didn't like them, only 1 I did.The drivers were on the wrong side of the car and they drive on the wrong side of the road. They get to have free turns when there is a red light. The power switch are off when they are on and flushing the toilet is a bit different. Our hotel name is Desert Palms Hotel and Suites, we have a heated pool and a spa, and a gym. Our room is 328 and is on the 3rd floor. They have cool cars in America.

Children's Diary:We get free breakfast and meet lots of people from other places. This morning we had breakfast on the rook of our hotel and can see most of Disneyland and all of California Screamin'.Today we did a tour of Los Angeles, for 7 hours we drove to all the famous places. We went to Hollywood and saw the Hollywood sign on the mountain. We saw all the famous handprints on the footpath. We went to some nice beaches.

In 2008 the world was in the grip of a global financial crises.Comparisons between the Great Depression were being made by even the most optimistic economist's. Such fears were spurred on primarily by a massive downswing in the international housing market led by the US and also in part to rampant corporate greed. In late 2008, the Australian government announced the release of a series of stimulus packages in an effort to invigorate the local economy. The resultant packages combined with a Qantas flight deal and changes to our salary arrangements to include tax refunds on meals, entertainment and now accommodation, enabled us to bring forward our plans to travel to the United States - by almost 12 months. For the parents, this was to become a honeymoon with the children. Obviously our plans were centred around the fun parks like Disneyland and Universal Studios including famous landmarks across Los Angeles.Rides high on our list of recommendations include The Simpsons and the Mummy at Universal Studios the Tower of Terror and California Screaming at California Park and most of the Disney classics at Disneyland. The day tour to famous beaches, the Hollywood sign, Sunset and Rodeo Drive, homes of the Hollywood stars and the Griffith Observatory were also highlights. We did venture across State lines to Nevada where most of our time outside California was in Vegas. This rather superficial city can be enjoyed for its architectural imagination (or lack thereof since many of the buildings are replicas of the real thing). The entertainment was reasonable albeit repetitive. However, we did get to enjoy Madam Tussauds, M&M world, the swimming and theme park at Circus Circus and the gondolas amongst a host of other things but Vegas is not for children. It does have an unfortunate sleezy side. Its a great place for a punt and to relax in style but like our kids we were glad to be back in Los Angeles.
